Dr. Tanner's Treatment Philosophy
I believe in a holistic approach that includes a healthy lifestyle, even though the focus of my practice is primarily addictive and behavioral health care. I believe that I must carefully listen to my patients and understand what they want that I may have to offer. Sometimes patients want so-called treatments or medications that may do more harm than good. In those situations I attempt to help them understand their disorder and how to lead a more fulfilling life, but I will not prescribe medications or use treatments that are counterproductive to their recovery or well being. Recovery is not an easy process in most cases. As an educator of physicians, I also believe that patients benefit from being educated about the disorder that afflicts them so that they are better motivated to achieve their true life goals. I utilize my near 35 years of experience in the fields of addictions and behavioral health to help my patients. I am certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry for the University of Florida College of Medicine and I serve on both the Board of Directors for the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine. I frequently enjoy educating physicians and other professionals about substance use disorders and behavioral health locally and at national conferences.

For any serious medication reactions or any very urgent matter - call 911 and go the nearest Emergency Room. For any significant suicide or harming thoughts, plans or risk either call the suicide hotline or, as soon as possible go to the nearest Emergency Room or psychiatric hospital. After an assessment and stabilization in a treatment center in the appropriate level of care (i.e. Detoxification, Residential, Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and/or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Dr. Tanner would likely be able to see the patient for ongoing outpatient care at his beach office. Treatment is available at Beaches Recovery/Tides Edge, Lakeview Health Systems in Jacksonville, Florida Recovery Center in Gainesville and for those who do not have insurance, at Gateway Community Services.
